Hand dyed naturally in small batches in our back yard with locally grown or ethically sourced plants, and natural mordants.
The colour varies gently through the skein so your project will have greater visual depth than with a commercially dyed yarn. The process of dyeing naturally takes time, but requires no nasty chemicals, and the colours are always soft on the eye. Typically plant-dyeing takes anywhere from 3 days to two weeks, starting with scouring (cleaning), mordanting twice (preparing the fibre to help it accept the dye better) with natural mordants like oak tannin, myrobalan (a nut), and potassium alum, a naturally occurring mineral (the same kind used in deodorant crystals). Then finally a 'tea' is made with the plant used for dyeing. The process of naturally dyeing yarn takes more time and effort, but its worth it, knowing that no harmful chemicals were used in the process.
The base yarn we use is EKO Certified Organic by USDA, GOTS, Control Union, SKAL & Certified Fair Trade by Control Union Fair Choice, it comes from Peru Naturtex, and it is hand dyed in small batches at the Vegan Yarn studio in New Westminster, BC, Canada.
